Pablo’s family. Can you imagine going away to a foreign place and never knowing when and if you’ll ever see the people you grew up with and love again? Or suddenly you’re away from someone for a long time and suddenly all their imperfections disappear?
Anyway, put too much work into this, mostly in one sitting (bad, bad, stupid). I don’t have names for them since they don’t appear, but they are as follows (from left to right): His father, his mother, his sister-in-law and nephew (and niece), his oldest brother, his second older brother (who I now can only see as the GOB of the family), Pablo, his sister Gordita, and his tio.
I guess the most important thing I can say about Pablo’s character is that he is humbled. Back home in Cuba he was kind of vain and shallow.

ghastlygoobie asked: After reading the first comic post and the premise, I'm hooked! The art style is lovely and it's fun to look at all the little details. The theme and setting you are aiming for is pretty darn great too. I'm both interested and excited for more!

Well, what a perfect blurb. You’re too kind, thank you! :)

Hi

Just want to thank you all! I’ve gotten so many kind and wonderful comments and all the likes and reblogs—I haven’t even done anything yet!

I will work hard so I can bring TGWFA to you again as soon as possible!

I will refer you here, for now

“The Girl Who Flew Away” is a graphic novel in progress by M. Dean, a third year illustration student at the Ringling College of Art and Design. The script was written in December, 2012 and I began making pages in May, 2013.

The story is set in 1976 and partly in 1926, following a twenty-something secretary, Greer Johnson. Through an affair with her boss, she becomes pregnant and is sent to stay with his friends for the duration in Key West, Florida. There, she begins to recollect her past and to dream about a little girl she’s never seen before named Eugenie. Meanwhile, she makes friends with a gardener missing his family and struggles with her temporary caretakers.

For now, I won’t be sharing pages on the internet, as I am trying to build up a buffer so that a consistent schedule of updates can be maintained while I’m in school. You’ll be sure to know when I finally have a site and a schedule is fixed, though!

Other Info:

  • Characters: Character Lineup, Bios
  • This comic hovers between a PG-13 and R “rating”, mostly for language and adult themes.
  • I estimate the comic to be somewhere around 300 pages long, more or less. I hope to get it published.
  • The pages are inked by hand and colored in Photoshop.

Thanks for reading!

Oh my god what did you do

Did you knock over an old person

It’s actually really small and insignificant things that add up over time and I obsess about (this time I just accidentally hung up on someone after bumbling like an idiot on the phone)

But I would like to bring your attention to that tag on that post:

#chiding-self-for-both-social-inadaquecy-and-abusive-perfectionism

Which perfectly describes my life.

I kind of wish I had knocked over an old person though. It’d make this story credible.

I literally have the easiest job in the world and am still completely incompetent at it.
